Qantas Is Recruiting Cabin Crew for Its New Singapore Base

Qantas has announced something it has never done before: a cabin crew base outside Australia. The airline is establishing its first international crew base in Singapore, starting from September 2026, with recruitment already open.

This is a significant move. Singapore is Qantas' most important international hub outside Australia, and the decision to base cabin crew there reflects how central Changi Airport has become to the airline's long-haul network. If you are based in Singapore or hold the right to live and work there, this is a genuine opportunity to fly with one of the world's most respected airlines.

Here is everything you need to know about the role, the recruitment process, and how to put your best application forward.

What Qantas Is Building in Singapore

The Singapore base is a major, long-term investment. Qantas plans to recruit 120 cabin crew in the first year and scale that number to 650 crew members over five years. These are not short-term contract roles. The airline is building a permanent, sizeable crew base that will operate flights between Singapore and Australia on a full-time basis.

Singapore already ranks as Qantas' third-largest hub globally, after Sydney and Melbourne. The airline uses Changi Airport as a critical connection point for passengers travelling between Australia and Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. Basing crew locally in Singapore allows Qantas to operate more efficiently, respond faster to disruptions, and manage resources more effectively on its highest-demand international routes.

Alongside the crew base announcement, Qantas has confirmed it will increase Airbus A380 services on the Singapore to Sydney route from December 2026, operating its 485-seat double-deck A380 on 13 of the 14 weekly services. That is a significant increase in capacity on one of the busiest transoceanic routes in the region.

Who Is Eligible to Apply

This is the most important detail to understand before you invest time in an application. The Singapore-based roles are open exclusively to Singapore citizens and permanent residents.

Qantas has been clear about this. The positions are designed for people who are legally entitled to live and work in Singapore on a permanent basis. Work permit holders and employment pass holders are not eligible. If you are an Australian citizen or resident looking for an international cabin crew role, this particular base is not the pathway. The Qantas international long-haul roles based in Australia remain open through the standard Qantas Careers recruitment process.

For Singapore citizens and permanent residents, job advertisements went live in February 2026 through the Qantas Careers website. If you have not already submitted an application and the listing is still open, do not delay.

Former Jetstar Asia Crew: You Have a Head Start

Jetstar Asia ceased operations in July 2025 after Qantas made the decision to wind down that subsidiary. If you were part of the Jetstar Asia cabin crew before that closure, Qantas has specifically confirmed that former Jetstar Asia crew members are eligible to apply for roles at the new Singapore Qantas base.

Additionally, Qantas expects to offer positions to approximately 50 of the existing Singapore-based Jetstar cabin crew as part of the transition. If you are currently flying for Jetstar in Singapore, this transition is worth understanding carefully. Speak directly with the Qantas recruitment team about your eligibility.

Having Jetstar Asia experience does not guarantee a place, but it is genuine, relevant experience flying in a multinational environment on routes similar to what Qantas operates. That background is valuable. Present it well.

What the Role Involves

Singapore-based Qantas cabin crew will operate flights between Singapore and Australia. This is long-haul flying. The primary route connects Changi Airport with Sydney, and the expansion of A380 services means crew will be working on one of Qantas' flagship aircraft with a high standard of passenger service.

Qantas long-haul routes include flights to London via Singapore, which is one of the most prestigious routes the airline operates. Crew based in Singapore will likely work a mix of Australia-focused routes and potentially wider network rotations as the base scales up.

The work itself follows the same standard as any Qantas cabin crew role. You are responsible for the safety and comfort of every passenger on board from pre-departure checks through to arrival. This includes delivering safety briefings, managing in-flight service, caring for passengers with special needs, responding to medical situations, and handling whatever comes up in the air. On long-haul flights, that can be a lot. Qantas trains its crew thoroughly, but the expectation is that you arrive with a genuine service mindset and the composure to stay focused for the duration of a multi-hour flight.

What Qantas Looks For in Cabin Crew

I have coached hundreds of candidates through Qantas applications over the years. The consistent qualities that Qantas recruitment teams are assessing are these: genuine warmth, composure under pressure, strong communication, and a safety-first mindset that is not just something you say, but something you understand and demonstrate.

Qantas is a premium carrier. The service standards on long-haul international routes are high, and the recruitment process reflects that. Group assessments test how you collaborate, not how well you perform. Individual interviews test whether your examples are real, specific, and grounded in actual experience. Grooming and presentation are assessed from the moment you arrive.

For the Singapore base specifically, experience in a premium customer service environment is valuable. Singapore's aviation and hospitality industry produces strong candidates. If you have worked in airline customer service, premium hospitality, or high-touch service roles, highlight that experience clearly in your application.

The general Qantas requirements apply here: you need strong English communication skills, the ability to meet the physical requirements of the role (including reaching overhead equipment), and the fitness to pass a full medical examination. Swimming ability is also tested as part of Qantas safety training requirements.

How to Apply

Applications are processed through the Qantas Careers website. Search for Singapore-based cabin crew roles and apply directly through the online portal. Have your resume and supporting documents ready before you start the application, including your Singapore identity documentation, passport, and any relevant certifications.

Write a cover letter that speaks specifically to why you want to fly with Qantas and why the Singapore base appeals to you. Do not send a generic letter. Qantas receives a large volume of applications for every intake. The candidates who are shortlisted demonstrate genuine knowledge of the airline, a clear understanding of what the role involves, and a compelling reason why they, specifically, would be an asset to that crew base.

Qantas is one of the oldest and most recognised airlines in the world. The Spirit of Australia branding is not just marketing. It reflects a culture built over more than a century of flying, with safety and service standards that hold up against any carrier globally.

For Singapore-based candidates, this is an opportunity to join a mainline international carrier without relocating, working on long-haul routes with a well-established airline that offers real career progression. As the base grows from 120 to 650 crew over five years, there will be opportunities for leadership roles, seniority, and expanded flying that simply do not exist in a base that is just starting out.

Getting in early, in the first year of a new base, is significant. The crew who join at this stage will have seniority over every crew member hired after them. In aviation, seniority matters. It shapes your roster, your route preferences, your days off, and your long-term earnings. There are advantages to being part of the foundation group that are hard to replicate later.

Prepare Before You Apply

If you are eligible and interested in this role, do not approach it casually. Qantas is a competitive airline with a rigorous recruitment process. The fact that the Singapore base is new does not mean the standards are lower. If anything, Qantas will be selective in who it puts forward as the foundation crew for its first international base.

Research the airline thoroughly. Know their fleet, their route network, their values, and what makes them different from other carriers. Prepare your STAR-method examples for the interview. Have your resume reviewed by someone who knows what airline recruiters look for. Practise your answers out loud, not just in your head.
